Find and Replace Text

Replace every match of a word or pattern in your text. Choose match case, whole word or regular expressions.

Characters: 0Words: 0Lines: 0

How find and replace works

Type the text to find and the text to put in its place, then click Replace all. The match counter shows how many times the text appears before you change anything, and the Undo arrow in the toolbar brings your original text back.

The three options

  • Match case: "Cat" and "cat" are treated as different words.
  • Whole word: only complete words match, so "cat" is left alone inside "category".
  • Regular expression: use patterns, for example \d+ for any number or ^\s+ for spaces at the start of a line.

Handy regular expressions

  • \s+ matches any run of spaces, tabs or line breaks.
  • \d+ matches a whole number.
  • (\w+)@(\w+) with $2 in the replacement swaps the two parts around.

How to use the Find and Replace tool

  1. Paste your text into the box.
  2. Type what to find and what to replace it with. The number of matches updates as you type.
  3. Click Replace all, then use the copy icon above the text. Undo brings the original back.

Frequently asked questions

What does Whole word do?

It only matches the search text when it is a complete word, so searching for "cat" will not change "category".

What is a regular expression?

A regular expression (regex) is a pattern that can match many different strings, for example \d+ matches any number. Turn it on to use patterns, and use $1 in the replacement to refer to the first group in brackets.

Can I undo a replacement?

Yes. Click the undo arrow in the toolbar above the text to go back to the text before the last replacement.
