Why text has unwanted line breaks
Text copied from PDFs, emails and web pages often keeps a hard line break at the end of every line, which makes it look broken when pasted somewhere else. Removing the breaks joins the lines back into normal paragraphs.
Which button should I use?
- Remove line breaks: joins everything into one line, separated by single spaces.
- Remove empty lines: deletes blank lines but keeps each remaining line on its own line.
- Trim extra spaces: squeezes repeated spaces into one and trims the ends of every line.
Remove line breaks in Word
In Microsoft Word, open Find and Replace, search for ^p (the paragraph mark) and replace it with a space. Use ^l for manual line breaks. The tool above does the same thing without opening Word.
How to use the Remove Line Breaks tool
- Paste your text into the box.
- Click Remove line breaks to join everything into one line, or Remove empty lines to keep paragraphs but drop the blank ones.
- Click the copy icon above the text to use the cleaned text.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between removing line breaks and removing empty lines?
Removing line breaks joins all lines into one line separated by spaces. Removing empty lines only deletes the blank lines and keeps the other lines as they are.
Why does text copied from a PDF have odd line breaks?
PDFs store each line separately, so pasting keeps a break at the end of every line. Joining the lines restores normal paragraphs.
Does it remove double spaces too?
Use Trim extra spaces. It squeezes repeated spaces into one and removes spaces at the start and end of each line.
