When to convert JPG to PNG

  • A website or programme asks specifically for a PNG file.
  • You plan to edit the picture several times and want to avoid losing more quality at each save.
  • You want to add transparency in an editor afterwards.
  • You need a lossless copy of what you have, for example for a screenshot you will annotate.

What to expect

A PNG made from a JPG has the same picture quality as the JPG, because the detail the JPG discarded cannot be restored. Because PNG does not compress photos as well, the new file is usually two to five times bigger.

Your pictures stay private

This tool works entirely inside your web browser. Your pictures are read by your own device, changed there and saved from there. They are not uploaded to a server, so nothing is stored, shared or seen by anyone else, and the page keeps working if your connection drops after it has loaded.

How to use the JPG to PNG tool

  1. Drop your JPG files on the box or click it to choose them.
  2. Leave PNG selected as the format.
  3. Download each PNG, or press Download all for a ZIP.

Frequently asked questions

Does converting JPG to PNG improve quality?

No. A PNG made from a JPG looks the same as the JPG, because the detail lost when the JPG was made cannot come back. The PNG file is also usually much larger.

Why would I want PNG then?

PNG is lossless, so it does not lose more quality each time you edit and save it, and it is accepted wherever a PNG is required. It also supports transparency if you edit the picture later.

Will the PNG have a transparent background?

No. A JPG has no transparency, so the PNG has the same solid background. Use an image editor to remove the background.

Are my files uploaded?

No. The conversion runs in your browser, so your pictures stay on your device.

How many files can I convert at once?

Up to 50. Use Download all to get a ZIP with every PNG.
