Characters: 0Words: 0Lines: 0
Why web addresses need encoding
Only some characters are allowed in a web address. Everything else is replaced by a percent sign and a code so browsers and servers read it correctly.
- Space becomes %20
- & becomes %26
- ? becomes %3F
- / becomes %2F
- # becomes %23
- % becomes %25
Encode a value, not a whole link
This tool encodes every special character, including the slashes and question marks that a complete link needs to keep. Use it for a single value such as a search term or a query parameter, then place that value inside your link.
How to use the URL Encode / Decode tool
- Paste your text or link into the box.
- Click Encode to make it web-safe, or Decode to make it readable.
- Click the copy icon above the text to use the result.
Frequently asked questions
What is URL encoding?
URL encoding replaces characters that are not allowed in web addresses with a % sign and a code. A space becomes %20.
Why does decoding show an error?
The text contains a % that is not followed by a valid code. Check for a stray % sign or a cut-off link.
Should I encode a whole link or just a part?
This tool encodes everything, including / and ?. Use it for a single value such as a search term, not for a whole link.
