What is title case?

Title case capitalises the important words in a title and leaves small connecting words lowercase. "the lord of the rings" becomes "The Lord of the Rings". The first and last words are always capitalised.

Title case rules in the main style guides

Style guides disagree on the details. AP and APA capitalise words of four letters or more, while Chicago and MLA keep every preposition lowercase, whatever its length. All of them capitalise the first and last word.

The Title Case button keeps these short words lowercase in the middle of a title: a, an, and, as, at, but, by, for, in, nor, of, on, or, the, to, up and via. If you must follow one specific guide, use the AP, APA or Chicago / MLA buttons, which apply that guide's rules. The proper nouns panel under the buttons keeps names such as London, NASA and iPhone, and you can add your own.

Title case or sentence case?

Title case is traditional for headlines, book titles and blog posts. Many websites and apps now prefer sentence case, where only the first word and proper names are capitalised, because it reads more naturally. Pick one style and use it everywhere on your site.

How to use the Title Case tool

  1. Paste or type your headline into the box.
  2. Click Title Case for headline style, a style guide button (AP, APA, Chicago/MLA), or Capitalized Case to capitalize every word.
  3. Click the copy icon above the text to use the result.
