Text to Speech
Paste or type any text and hear it read aloud. Choose a voice, speed, pitch and volume. It uses the voices on your own device, so your text is never uploaded.

Loading the voices on your device…
The voices come from your device or browser, so the list and the sound differ between computers and phones. Changes to speed or voice apply the next time you press Read aloud.
What text to speech is good for
- Proofreading: hearing your writing read aloud makes missing words and awkward sentences easy to notice.
- Accessibility: people with low vision, dyslexia or tired eyes can listen instead of read.
- Learning languages: hear how words and sentences should sound.
- Listening to articles, notes or emails while you cook, walk or travel.
- Checking a script or speech for timing before you record it.
Getting a better voice
- Try different voices. Many devices include several, and names with "Natural", "Neural" or "Premium" are often the most lifelike.
- Slow the speed a little (0.9× to 1×) for clear speech, or raise it to 1.3× to 1.5× to listen quickly.
- Add punctuation. Commas and full stops give the voice natural pauses.
- Install more voices in your system settings (Windows: Speech, macOS: Accessibility, Android and iPhone: Accessibility) and reload this page.
What to know
This tool uses the speech feature built into your browser. That means it works without sign-up and keeps your text on your device, but it also means the voices depend on your system and the audio cannot be saved as a file.
How to use the Text to Speech tool
- Type or paste the text you want to hear.
- Choose a voice from the list and set the speed, pitch and volume.
- Press Read aloud. Use Pause, Resume and Stop while it reads.
Frequently asked questions
Is the text sent to a server?
No. The tool uses your browser's built-in speech feature, which reads the text with voices on your device. Your text is not uploaded or stored by this site.
Why do the voices look different on my phone and my computer?
The voices come from your operating system and browser, not from this site. Windows, macOS, Android, iPhone and different browsers each include different voices and languages. Installing extra voices in your system settings adds them to the list.
Can I download the speech as an MP3?
No. Browsers can play speech but cannot save it as a file. To make an audio file you can use your computer's sound recorder while the text plays, or a text to speech service that creates audio files.
How do I make it read faster or slower?
Move the Speed slider between 0.5× (half speed) and 2× (double speed). The new speed is used the next time you press Read aloud.
Which languages are available?
Every language that your device has a voice for. The list is grouped by language code such as en-US, en-GB, es-ES or fr-FR, and voices for your page language are shown first.
