APA title case rules

APA 7 asks for title case in the titles of books, reports and articles mentioned in your text, in the title of your paper and in the top levels of headings. Capitalize the first word, the last word, any word that is a noun, verb, adjective, adverb, pronoun or subordinating conjunction, and every word of four letters or more. Lowercase minor words of three letters or fewer: articles (a, an, the), short coordinating conjunctions (and, as, but, for, if, nor, or, so, yet) and short prepositions (at, by, in, of, off, on, per, to, up, via). Also capitalize the first word after a colon or dash.

Title case or sentence case in APA?

APA uses both. In the reference list, the titles of articles, books and web pages are written in sentence case, with only the first word, the first word after a colon and proper nouns capitalized. The title of the journal itself is in title case. Use this tool's APA button for text and headings, and the Sentence case tool for reference list titles, then restore proper nouns.

How the tool works

Your text is lowercased, then each word is checked against the minor-word list above. The first and last words, words after a colon, dash or question mark, and each part of a hyphenated word are always capitalized. The proper nouns panel under the buttons puts back names and abbreviations. Because the tool follows rules and cannot understand the sentence, read the result once before you submit it.

How to use the APA Title Case tool

  1. Paste or type your title into the box.
  2. Click APA Title Case.
  3. Check proper nouns and the word after a colon, then click the copy icon.

Frequently asked questions

What are the APA title case rules?

APA capitalizes the first word, the last word, major words and every word of four letters or more. It also capitalizes the first word after a colon or dash. Short articles, conjunctions and prepositions of three letters or fewer stay lowercase.

When does APA use title case?

APA 7 uses title case for the titles of books, articles and reports in the text and for the paper title and major headings. Reference list entries use sentence case for article and book titles, so convert those with Sentence case.

Is APA the same as AP?

They are very close. APA also keeps "if" lowercase. Both capitalize words of four letters or more.
