What is dot.case?

dot.case writes every word in lowercase and puts a dot between them: "User First Name", userFirstName and user_first_name all become user.first.name. This converter splits your text into words at spaces, underscores, hyphens and camelCase boundaries, so you can paste almost any naming style and get the same result. Each line is converted separately, which lets you convert a whole list of names in one go.

Where dot.case is used

The dot suggests hierarchy, so the style is common wherever a name describes a path through nested settings: Java properties files and Spring configuration (server.port, spring.datasource.url), logging categories, message topics, feature flags and Python or Java package names. It is also how most developers write the path of a value inside an object, such as user.address.city.

  • Configuration keys in properties, YAML, TOML and environment-style files.
  • Package, namespace and logger names.
  • Event names and metric names (checkout.payment.failed).
  • Object paths for lookups in JSON and templates.

dot.case or another style?

Choose by the place the name will live. Dots are fine in config keys and metric names, but in many programming languages a dot means property access, so a variable cannot be called user.name. For variables use camelCase or snake_case, for web addresses and CSS use kebab-case, and for constants use CONSTANT_CASE. If you only need slashes between the words, use path/case instead.

How to use the dot.case tool

  1. Paste one name or phrase per line into the box.
  2. Click dot.case (or another naming style).
  3. Click the copy icon above the text and use the result.
