Mean, median and mode explained
- Mean: add the numbers and divide by how many there are. This is what people usually mean by "the average".
- Median: the middle number once they are in order. With an even count it is the average of the two middle numbers.
- Mode: the number that appears most often. A list can have one mode, several, or none.
- Range: the largest number minus the smallest. It shows how spread out the numbers are.
Worked example
Take 2, 4, 4, 4, 5, 5, 7, 9. The sum is 40 and there are 8 numbers, so the mean is 5. In order, the two middle numbers are 4 and 5, so the median is 4.5. The number 4 appears three times, so it is the mode. The range is 9 − 2 = 7.
Which average to use
- Mean: best for evenly spread numbers such as test scores or daily temperatures.
- Median: best when a few extreme values would distort the mean, such as incomes or house prices.
- Mode: best for the most common choice, such as a popular size or colour.
How to calculate an average in Excel or Google Sheets
With numbers in A1 to A10, use =AVERAGE(A1:A10) for the mean, =MEDIAN(A1:A10) for the median and =MODE.SNGL(A1:A10) for the mode. For the range use =MAX(A1:A10)-MIN(A1:A10).
How to use the Average Calculator tool
- Type or paste your numbers, separated by commas, spaces or new lines.
- Read the mean (the usual average) in large type.
- See the median, mode, range, sum, count, smallest and largest underneath.
- Open "Show sorted list" to check your numbers in order.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate the average of a set of numbers?
Add all the numbers together and divide by how many there are. The average of 4, 8 and 12 is (4 + 8 + 12) ÷ 3 = 8.
What is the difference between mean, median and mode?
The mean is the sum divided by the count. The median is the middle value when the numbers are in order (or the average of the two middle values). The mode is the value that appears most often.
Which average should I use?
Use the mean for evenly spread data. Use the median when a few very large or small values would pull the mean off, as with house prices or incomes. Use the mode for the most common value, such as a popular shoe size.
Why does the calculator say there is no mode?
When every number appears only once, there is no mode. If several numbers share the highest count, all of them are shown.
