How a discount is worked out
The amount you save is the original price multiplied by the percent off, divided by 100. The sale price is the original price minus that amount. A 30% discount on $80 saves $24, so the sale price is $56. If sales tax applies, it is added to the sale price, not to the original price.
Sale price quick reference
The table shows the price you pay after common discounts on some round prices.
| Original price | 10% off | 20% off | 25% off | 30% off | 50% off |

Stacked discounts
When a shop takes a second percentage off a price that is already reduced, the two discounts do not add up. 20% off followed by 10% off is the same as 28% off, because the 10% is taken from the smaller, already discounted price. The extra discount box above works this out for you and shows the combined percentage.
Tips for sale shopping
- Compare the final price, not the size of the percentage. 30% off a higher starting price can cost more than 20% off a lower one.
- Check whether tax is added after the discount, which is usual.
- Do the quick maths: 10% is the price with the decimal point moved one place left, and 25% is a quarter.
- To find the original price, divide the sale price by one minus the discount as a decimal.
How to use the Discount Calculator tool
- Type the original price.
- Tap a discount such as 20% or 50%, or type your own percentage.
- Open "Add an extra discount or sales tax" for a second discount or tax, if you need them.
- Read the sale price, the amount you save and, with tax, the final price you pay.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a discount?
Multiply the price by the percent off and divide by 100 to get the amount saved, then subtract it from the price. A 25% discount on $120 saves $30, so you pay $90.
How do I work out the price after two discounts?
The second discount is taken off the already reduced price, so the two percentages do not simply add up. 20% off and then a further 10% off $100 gives $72, which is 28% off in total, not 30%.
Is sales tax added before or after the discount?
In most shops tax is charged on the discounted price. This calculator applies tax after the discounts. Rules can differ for some coupons and manufacturer rebates, so check the receipt if in doubt.
How do I find the original price from the sale price?
Divide the sale price by 1 minus the discount as a decimal. If $90 is after 25% off, the original price was 90 ÷ 0.75 = $120. The percentage calculator's "Find the whole" question can help with this.
