How numbers are written in words

Numbers from 21 to 99 use a hyphen: twenty-one, forty-two, ninety-nine.
Hundreds, thousands and millions are said with the number in front: three hundred, five thousand, two million.
Large numbers are read in groups of three digits, from the left: 1,234,567 is one million two hundred thirty-four thousand five hundred sixty-seven.
Decimals are read digit by digit after the word point: 3.14 is three point one four.

Writing the amount on a cheque

Banks ask for the amount in words as well as in numbers, so it cannot easily be changed. Write the whole amount in words, then the cents as a fraction over 100, then the currency. For $2,505.07: two thousand five hundred five and 07/100 dollars. Start the words at the far left and draw a line through any space that is left.

Cardinal and ordinal numbers

A cardinal number says how many (three). An ordinal number gives the position (third). Ordinals are made by changing the last word: one becomes first, two becomes second, three becomes third, five becomes fifth, eight becomes eighth, nine becomes ninth, twelve becomes twelfth, and the rest end in -th (fourth, tenth). Words that end in y change to -ieth: twentieth, thirtieth, ninetieth.

How do I write a number in words on a cheque?

Write the whole dollars in words, then the cents as a fraction of 100. For $1,234.56 write: one thousand two hundred thirty-four and 56/100 dollars. Draw a line to fill any empty space after the words so nothing can be added.

Do you say "and" in numbers like 101?

In American English, "and" is usually left out: one hundred one. In British English, it is normal to say one hundred and one. Use the British style box to choose.

How do you write decimals in words?

Say the whole part, then "point", then each digit on its own. So 3.14 is three point one four, and 0.05 is zero point zero five.

How do I write ordinal numbers like 21st in words?
