Hours worked per day

8:00 h

That is 8.00 decimal hours (480 minutes).

Per week
40:00 h (40.00)

Simple clock arithmetic. For payroll or billing, follow your agreement or payroll records. Full disclaimer and terms of use.

How hours worked are calculated

Hours worked is the end time minus the start time, minus any unpaid break. From 9:00 to 17:30 is 8 hours 30 minutes, and with a 30-minute unpaid break that is 8 hours. If the end time is the same as or earlier than the start time, the calculator treats it as the next day, so a shift from 22:00 to 06:00 is 8 hours.

Minutes as decimal hours

Payroll and invoices often use decimal hours. Divide the minutes by 60.

Adding and subtracting time

Time uses 60 seconds to a minute, 60 minutes to an hour and 24 hours to a day, so ordinary addition does not work. The calculator converts both lengths of time to seconds, adds or subtracts them, and turns the answer back into days, hours, minutes and seconds. For example 2 h 45 min plus 1 h 30 min is 4 h 15 min.

How to calculate hours in Excel or Google Sheets

  • Hours between two times: put the start in A1 and the end in B1 and use =(B1-A1)*24, then format as a number.
  • Past midnight: use =MOD(B1-A1,1)*24.
  • Subtract a 30-minute break: use =(MOD(B1-A1,1)*24)-0.5.
  • Format a cell as [h]:mm to show totals over 24 hours.

Before you use the result for pay

  • Employers may round time to the nearest 5, 6 or 15 minutes. Check your policy.
  • Rules on unpaid breaks, overtime, travel time and holidays differ by employer, contract and place.
  • Keep your own record of start and finish times and compare it with your pay slip.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate hours worked?

Subtract the start time from the end time, then subtract any unpaid break. From 9:00 to 17:30 with a 30-minute break you worked 8 hours.

What if I worked past midnight?

If the end time is the same as or earlier than the start time, the calculator assumes the end is on the next day. 22:00 to 06:00 is 8 hours.

What are decimal hours?

Decimal hours write minutes as a fraction of an hour: 15 minutes is 0.25, 30 minutes is 0.5 and 45 minutes is 0.75. Payroll often uses them to multiply by an hourly rate.

How do I add or subtract hours and minutes?

Add or subtract each unit with borrowing, or convert everything to seconds first. 2 h 45 min plus 1 h 30 min is 4 h 15 min. This calculator does that for you and shows the total in other units.

Can I use this for payroll?

It is a simple helper, not a payroll system. Employers may round time and count breaks and overtime in their own ways, so check your records and the rules that apply to you.
