Date Difference Calculator
Pick two dates to see how many years, months, weeks and days lie between them, and how many of those days are weekdays. It works in your browser and nothing is uploaded.
Pick an end date and the time between the two dates shows here.

How the date difference is worked out
The calculator counts the real calendar days between the two dates, then shows the same gap as whole years, whole months and the days left over. Leap years and months of different lengths are handled for you. The order of the dates does not matter: the earlier date is always the start.
What you get
- The difference in years, months and days.
- The total number of days, and the same gap in weeks and days.
- How many of those days are weekdays (Monday to Friday) and how many fall on a weekend.
Counting the end date
Most "days between" questions count the days that pass, so 1 January to 2 January is 1 day. A booking, a course or a deadline often counts both the first and the last day, which makes the same dates 2 days. Tick "Count the end date too" for that second way of counting.
Common uses
- Counting down the days to a holiday, wedding, exam or deadline.
- Working out how long a project, contract, lease or trip lasts.
- Checking notice periods and how many working days are left.
- Finding how long ago something happened.
How to calculate days between dates in Excel or Google Sheets
With the start date in A1 and the end date in B1, use =B1-A1 for the number of days. For whole years, months or days use =DATEDIF(A1,B1,"Y"), =DATEDIF(A1,B1,"YM") and =DATEDIF(A1,B1,"MD"). For weekdays only, use =NETWORKDAYS(A1,B1), which counts both end dates and can skip a list of holidays.
How to use the Date Difference Calculator tool
- Choose the start date in the From box. It starts as today.
- Choose the end date in the To box.
- Tick "Count the end date too" if both the first and the last day should be included.
- Read the difference in years, months and days, the total days and weeks, and the weekdays.
Frequently asked questions
How many days are there between two dates?
Choose both dates above and the total appears straight away. By default the start day is counted and the end day is not, so 1 January to 2 January is 1 day.
Should the end date be counted?
It depends on the question. For "how long between" the usual answer leaves the end date out. For "how many days is the booking, trip or course" you often count both days, so tick "Count the end date too".
Does the calculator count business days?
It counts weekdays, Monday to Friday. Public holidays differ by country and region, so they are not removed. Subtract any holidays that fall on weekdays yourself.
Does it work if the first date is later than the second?
Yes. The dates are compared the other way round and the page tells you so. You can also press Swap dates.
Are leap years handled correctly?
Yes. The calculator uses the real calendar, so 29 February and months of different lengths are counted exactly.
