Daylight saving time is applied for the date you choose, so the difference between two cities can change during the year.

How time zones work

The world is divided into time zones, each described as an offset from UTC (Coordinated Universal Time). Most offsets are whole hours, such as UTC−5 for New York in winter, but some countries use half hours (India is UTC+5:30) or quarter hours (Nepal is UTC+5:45). To convert a time, work out the difference between the two offsets and add it. 9:00 in New York (UTC−5) is 14:00 in London (UTC+0), because London is 5 hours ahead.

Offsets of some major cities

Standard time is used in winter in the northern hemisphere. Cities that change their clocks use the daylight saving offset in summer.

Daylight saving time

  • United States and Canada: clocks go forward on the second Sunday in March and back on the first Sunday in November (most of Canada and the US; Arizona and Saskatchewan are common exceptions).
  • European Union and the United Kingdom: clocks go forward on the last Sunday in March and back on the last Sunday in October.
  • Australia (Sydney, Melbourne): daylight saving runs from the first Sunday in October to the first Sunday in April, because the seasons are reversed. Queensland, the Northern Territory and Western Australia do not change their clocks.
  • India, Japan, China and many other countries do not use daylight saving at all.
  • Because countries change on different dates, the gap between two cities can shift by an hour for a few weeks each year. Always convert for the actual date.

Tips for scheduling across time zones

  • Write the time with the zone and the date, for example 15:00 UTC on 12 March, so there is no confusion.
  • Avoid abbreviations such as IST or CST, which mean different zones in different countries. Use a city name or a UTC offset.
  • Check for a day change. A morning meeting in Sydney is the evening before in New York.
  • For a team spread across the world, pick a window that is reasonable for most people and rotate the inconvenient slot.
  • Calendar apps convert times automatically when you set the right zone for the event.

What UTC and GMT mean

UTC is the world's reference time, kept by atomic clocks. GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) is the older name for the time at the Greenwich meridian and is the same as UTC for everyday purposes. The United Kingdom uses GMT in winter and British Summer Time (UTC+1) in summer.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert a time to another time zone?

Find the difference between the two zones and add or subtract it. 9:00 in New York (UTC−5 in winter) is 14:00 in London (UTC+0). This converter does it for you and applies daylight saving for the date you pick.

Does it handle daylight saving time?

Yes. It uses the real rules for the date you choose, so the gap between two cities can change during the year. For example New York and London are 5 hours apart most of the year, but 4 hours apart for a few weeks in March and again in the autumn when the two countries change their clocks on different dates.

What is UTC?

UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) is the world's reference time. Every time zone is described as an offset from it, such as UTC+5:30 for India or UTC−8 for Los Angeles in winter.

Why does the time say +1 day or −1 day?

When two cities are on opposite sides of the world, one of them can already be on the next calendar day. The label shows how many days that city is ahead of or behind the date you chose.

What if the time I chose does not exist?

When clocks go forward, one hour is skipped (for example 2:30 a.m. on the day daylight saving starts in the United States). The converter tells you and uses the time an hour later. When clocks go back, a time happens twice and the first one is used.
