Oven temperatures

Recipes from different countries use different scales. These common oven settings are rounded to the nearest 5 degrees Celsius.

The three temperature scales

  • Celsius (°C) is used in most countries. 0°C is the freezing point of water and 100°C its boiling point at sea level.
  • Fahrenheit (°F) is used mainly in the United States for weather, cooking and body temperature. Water freezes at 32°F and boils at 212°F.
  • Kelvin (K) is the scientific scale. It starts at absolute zero (0 K = −273.15°C), where there is no heat to remove, so it has no negative values. A kelvin is the same size as a degree Celsius.

How to convert temperature in Excel or Google Sheets

Use =CONVERT(A1,"C","F") to change Celsius in A1 to Fahrenheit, or =CONVERT(A1,"F","C") for the other way. The code for kelvin is "K".

How to use the Temperature Converter tool

  1. Type the temperature in the Value box. Negative numbers are fine.
  2. Choose the scale you are converting from and the scale you want.
  3. Read the answer, or press the arrows to swap the two scales.
  4. Look at the table underneath for the same temperature in all three scales.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert Celsius to Fahrenheit?

Multiply the Celsius temperature by 9, divide by 5, then add 32. For example, 20°C × 9 ÷ 5 + 32 = 68°F. A quick estimate is to double the Celsius number and add 30.

How do I convert Fahrenheit to Celsius?

Subtract 32 from the Fahrenheit temperature, then multiply by 5 and divide by 9. For example, (350°F − 32) × 5 ÷ 9 = 176.7°C, a common oven setting.

What is normal body temperature in Celsius and Fahrenheit?

The usual reference value is 37°C, which is 98.6°F. Normal body temperature varies a little between people and through the day. A temperature of 38°C (100.4°F) or higher is generally counted as a fever.

At what temperature are Celsius and Fahrenheit equal?

At −40. Minus 40 degrees Celsius is exactly minus 40 degrees Fahrenheit.

How do I convert Celsius to Kelvin?

Add 273.15. Water freezes at 0°C = 273.15 K and boils at 100°C = 373.15 K (at sea level). Absolute zero, the lowest possible temperature, is 0 K or −273.15°C.
