How sales tax is worked out

Sales tax is a percentage of the price before tax. To add it, multiply the price by the rate and add the result: $50 at 13% HST is $6.50 of tax, for a total of $56.50. To take tax out of a total, divide the total by 1 plus the rate: $56.50 ÷ 1.13 = $50.00.

Sales tax rates by province and territory

These are the rates charged on most taxable goods and services. In Quebec, British Columbia, Manitoba and Saskatchewan the provincial tax is charged in addition to the 5% GST, and both are worked out on the price before tax.

GST, HST, PST and QST in plain words

  • GST: the 5% federal Goods and Services Tax, charged across Canada.
  • HST: the Harmonized Sales Tax, one combined rate that replaces GST and provincial tax (Ontario and the Atlantic provinces).
  • PST (or RST in Manitoba): a separate provincial sales tax in British Columbia, Manitoba and Saskatchewan.
  • QST: Quebec's sales tax, charged together with the GST.

What is not taxed

Some things are zero-rated (tax is charged at 0%), such as basic groceries and prescription drugs. Others are exempt, such as many health, education and child-care services and long-term residential rent. Provinces also have their own lists for items like children's clothing or restaurant meals. This calculator applies the rate to the full amount you type, so remove any untaxed items first.

Sales tax in the United States

The US has no national sales tax. Each state sets a rate and many cities and counties add their own, so the total depends on the address. The calculator starts from each state's base rate plus the average local rate, and you can type your own city rate. Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon have no state sales tax, and Alaska has only local taxes.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add GST/HST to a price?

Multiply the price by the tax rate and add the result. At Ontario's 13% HST, $100 gets $13 of tax for a total of $113. You can also multiply the price by 1.13.

How do I take tax out of a price that includes it?

Divide the total by 1 plus the combined rate. In Ontario, $113 ÷ 1.13 = $100 before tax, so $13 of it was HST. Choose Remove tax above to do this for you.

What is the difference between GST, HST, PST and QST?

GST is the 5% federal tax. HST combines the federal and provincial taxes into one rate and is used in Ontario and the Atlantic provinces. BC, Manitoba and Saskatchewan charge a separate PST or RST, and Quebec charges the QST, on top of the 5% GST.

Is the QST charged on top of the GST in Quebec?

No. Since 2013 both taxes are calculated on the price before tax, so the combined rate is 5% + 9.975% = 14.975%.

Are all items taxed?

No. Basic groceries, prescription drugs and some other items are zero-rated, and some services such as many health and education services are exempt. This calculator applies the rate you choose to the whole amount, so check your receipt for items that are not taxed.

Which countries does this calculator cover?

Canada (GST, HST, PST and QST), the United States (state and local sales tax), the United Kingdom (VAT), Australia (GST) and India (GST, including CGST and SGST or IGST). Choose your country at the top.

How is US sales tax different?

The US has no national sales tax. Each state sets its own rate and many cities and counties add a local rate, so the total depends on the address. The calculator starts at the state average for local tax and lets you type your own rate.
