How the tip is worked out

The tip is the bill multiplied by the tip percentage, divided by 100. The total is the bill plus the tip. When you split the bill, the total is divided by the number of people. Amounts are worked out in cents, so there are no rounding surprises like $0.0000001.

The table shows the tip on common bill amounts. Add it to the bill for the total.

Mental maths shortcuts

  • 10%: move the decimal point one place to the left ($64 gives $6.40).
  • 15%: take 10%, then add half of it.
  • 20%: take 10% and double it.
  • 18%: take 20% and subtract a tenth of that.

Splitting a bill fairly

  • Decide whether to tip on the amount before tax or after it, and use the same figure for everyone.
  • If people ordered very different amounts, work out each person's own bill and tip it separately instead of splitting evenly.
  • Round up each share when paying in cash, so nobody needs change for small coins.

Tipping customs

In Canada and the United States a tip of 15% to 20% is usual for table service, and a little less or a few dollars is common for takeout, taxis and hair salons. In many other countries a service charge is already on the bill or tipping is not expected. When travelling, check local custom first.

How to use the Tip Calculator tool

  1. Type the bill amount before tip.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a tip?

Multiply the bill by the tip percentage and divide by 100. A 15% tip on $80 is 80 × 15 ÷ 100 = $12, so the total is $92.

How much should I tip?

Customs differ by country. In Canada and the United States 15% to 20% is common in restaurants for table service. Many places in Europe and Asia expect little or no tip. Check local custom for where you are.

Should I tip on the bill before or after tax?

Both are common. Many people tip on the pre-tax amount, others on the total. This calculator tips on the amount you type, so enter the figure you want to tip on.

How do I split a bill with a tip?

Add the tip to the bill, then divide the total by the number of people. Use the plus button to set the number of people and read the "Each person pays" amount.

What does rounding up each share do?

It raises each person's share to the next whole dollar, which makes paying in cash easier. The extra goes to the tip, so the tip becomes slightly higher than the percentage you chose.
