How to write a number in Roman numerals

Split the number into thousands, hundreds, tens and units, write each part, and put them together from largest to smallest. For 1994: 1,000 is M, 900 is CM, 90 is XC and 4 is IV, so 1994 is MCMXCIV.

  • Add symbols from largest to smallest: VIII = 5 + 3 = 8.
  • A smaller symbol before a larger one is subtracted. The only pairs used are IV (4), IX (9), XL (40), XC (90), CD (400) and CM (900).
  • Never repeat a symbol more than three times in a row, so 4 is IV and not IIII.

Frequently asked questions

How do I write 2026 in Roman numerals?

2026 is MMXXVI: MM is 2,000, XX is 20 and VI is 6. Write the thousands, hundreds, tens and units from left to right.

How do I read a Roman numeral?

Add the values of the symbols from left to right, but when a smaller symbol comes before a bigger one, subtract it instead. So XIV is 10 + (5 − 1) = 14 and MCMXCIV is 1,000 + (1,000 − 100) + (100 − 10) + (5 − 1) = 1,994.

What are the seven Roman numeral symbols?

I = 1, V = 5, X = 10, L = 50, C = 100, D = 500 and M = 1,000. Only I, X, C and M can be repeated, up to three times in a row.

Why does the converter stop at 3,999?

Standard Roman numerals have no symbol above M (1,000) and never repeat a symbol more than three times, so the largest number is MMMCMXCIX (3,999). Larger numbers were written with a bar over the symbols, which is not part of the standard set.

Is there a Roman numeral for zero?

No. The Romans had no symbol for zero. The converter starts at 1 (I). Some medieval texts used the word nulla for nothing, but it was not a numeral.
